Free childcare

When does free childcare start?

Working parents in England can get up to 30 hours of free childcare a week from 9 months old. But it doesn't start on the day your baby turns 9 months: it starts at the beginning of the next term.

Checked against GOV.UK on 28 October 2026
Short answer: free hours start on 1 January, 1 April or 1 September, whichever comes first after your child turns 9 months. You can apply from when your baby is 23 weeks old, and must apply by the day before the term starts.

The term rule

Your nursery or childminder sets the exact first day, and many want your code earlier than the deadline, so apply as soon as you can.

Who qualifies for the 30 hours

What about age 2, 3 and 4?

The hours are for 38 weeks a year. Some providers let you spread them over more weeks with fewer hours a week.

Common questions

Can I get free childcare from 9 months?

Yes, if you're a working parent in England and meet the earnings rules. It starts the term after your child turns 9 months: 1 January, 1 April or 1 September.

When can I apply for the 30 hours code?

From when your baby is 23 weeks old. Apply well before the term starts: the deadline is the day before the term begins, and many nurseries want your code earlier.

Do I have to pay anything with free childcare?

The hours themselves are free, but providers can charge for extras such as meals, nappies or trips. Ask what's included before you sign up.

Is free childcare the same in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?

No. These rules are for England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own childcare schemes.
